Ask for a name and contact before chatting
Three settings, and “required” isn't always the right one.
Install & sites → your site → Branding → Ask for details before chatting. Three choices:
- No, write straight away. The person types their message right away. The email is asked for later, out of hours or when the agent needs it.
- Yes, but it can be skipped. The form shows up (name, email or phone — either one is enough) with a button to skip it.
- Yes, required. No message without a contact.
Which one to pick
A form up front reduces how many conversations start. On a store with a lot of cold traffic, “required” often costs more than it brings in: people who just had a question leave. “Yes, but it can be skipped” is the right default for a store; “required” makes sense for a service business where every conversation is a quote request.
What the person gives you is used to find them: their Shopify orders are looked up from that email, never without it.
